Uniting Through Traditional Music

This is a project conducted by Dr Panikos Giorgoudes, ethnomusicologist and is carried out in the framework and the laboratory of the Cyprus Music Network, by members of the Cyprus Musicological Society. The project is funded by the UNOPS. It is uniting all the Cypriot music regardless of ethnicity. The purpose is to combine Cypriot songs and establish a common archive that is a result of systematic and methodological research and analysis with ethnomusicological approach. We chose some of the material to include on this website and by this website; it is becoming possible for anyone who is interested to have access to Cypriot music. The complete original recordings are located in the lab at Intercollege.

The project, which is supported by UNOPS, began on 1 January 2004. The first step for the research was to contact local people to find key informants. In order to do this; we prepared a question sheet (not a questionnaire) to help us knowing people if they were willing to help or if they are capable to help. Determination of the informants helped us to determine some of the villages that we were going to make fieldwork. But it was not the only way to determine. There were villages that we did not know anyone from there. To make a start, we just went and started from the coffee shops or the sports club building of the villages (which are both cultural centers of villages).

Right before we launched the research, every researcher examined the technical equipment and other methodological issues.
The fieldwork period began in February. We created two research groups, one for the Turkish Cypriot (2 researchers headed by the project assistant coordinator) and one for the Greek Cyprus villages (3 researchers headed by the project coordinator). The research teams covered more that 150 villages since then.

As we all know, music is a cultural element, so we did not only collected music, but we collected information about the context and additional data about the musical material that are collected.

We proceeded with transcriptions, analysis and classification of the collected data, music, songs and texts in the lab at Intercollege.
